How do I donate
a car?
There are a few key steps to remember when making a car, truck, or RV
donation.
Before you do anything, you need to find a company that you want to
donate to.
If you are involved in a local church, you may want to ask them if they
accept donations. If you have cancer, you may want to check with a
company who funds cancer research.
If you love to be outdoors and love nature, you should find a company
that accepts donations and uses the proceeds to plant trees or keep
parks clean.
After you have selected the perfect company to work with, ask them if
they will pick up your donation for you. Most companies will either
have a tow truck pick it up, or have an agent of the company come and
drive it away.
They should help you with the transportation of your donated vehicle
whether it is running or not.
You should also arrange for them to give you a receipt for your
donation. According to IRS law, they may have to wait until after they
sell your donation to be able to provide you with an accurate receipt.
If your vehicle is worth less than $500 you should be able to get a
receipt immediately.
After they have possession of your donation, they should guide you
through the paperwork. You should have to sign the title over to the
company if you have it.
If you do not have the title, you may have to sign something agreeing
to release the title and/or your liability. If you have
further
paperwork questions, consult the company to which you are making a
donation, a tax advisor, or an attorney.
Once you have finished the paperwork, and have your receipt in hand,
your donation is done.
Keep your receipt until tax time and make sure you itemize your
deductions in order to take advantage of the full benefit of your car
donation. |
