Who should I donate a
car to?
So you have decided to donate a car! Congratulations, you not only help
yourself, but people in need as well, through charities and other
organizations.
Who should you make your car donation to?
Before you decide on a company, check their history with the Better
Business Bureau and/or the IRS about the tax-exempt status and their
ability to accept automobile donations.
You may also want to check local newspapers online. It is always
good to know if the charity or organizations you are donating a car
to. It is always good to know if the charity you are donating a
car to is the subject of an investigation or scandal.
You will also want to research the company to find out how
much goes to charity. Some charities that accept car
donations keep a high percentage for salaries, fees, and operating
expenses which minimize the amount of your car donation that goes to
the organization.
The need for vehicles is great, so most nonprofit companies will assist
you with your donated car. They will usually help you with the
paperwork and transfer of title and/or ownership.
Make sure they company you choose to deal with will help with the
paperwork and will pick up your car or truck if necessary.
Some
places will send out a tow truck, others will send out a driver to
drive your car to the desired location.
We have a list
of charities available for you to select from.
For tax considerations and deductions, you should consult a tax advisor
as the IRS
rule governing car donations changed January 1, 2005.
